الهدهد طائر جميل المنظر رشيق الحركة يعرف باسم hoopoe وهو من عائلة Upupidae ورتبة الرفرافCoraciformes , ويعد من الطيور النادرة ويتميز بأن له عرف مميز كالتاج على رأسه .
ويتميز برشاقته وحسن مظهره خصوصاً تلك النتوءات الريشية أو القزعة الموجودة في مؤخرة رأسه ، طوله 31 سم , أرجله قصيرة وذيله مربع والريش في مؤخرة رأسه قد يتحول إلى شكل مروحي عندما يستثار .
أما لونه فهو بني فاتح وعرفه البني مرقط من أطرافه بالريش الأسود ونصفه الأسفل أسود مرقط بالريش الأبيض في نظم جميل .
ويعمل على نفخ ريش رقبته عند المناداة وعند الخطر ، منقاره معقوف طويل وقوي ، وأجنحته دائرية تقريباً .

يتغذى الهدهد على الحشرات والديدان ويعد من أصدقاء البيئة والفلاحين فهو ينظف الأرض من الديدان واليرقات والآفات التى تضر المزارعين .
ويستطيع التقاط هذه الحشرات بسهولة تامة وذلك بمنقاره الطويل والمدبب الذي يتميز بقلة الانحناء .
تبنى أنثى طائر الهدهد عشها في شقوق الجدران أو فجوات الأرض ، وتتميز رائحة عشها بأنها نفاذة شديدة القذارة ، لأن الأم تقوم بفرز تلك الرائحة الكريهة عن طريق رش رذاذ أسود زيتي برائحة كريهة من غدة بقاعدة الذيل لتحمي صغارها من الطيور الجارحة والحيوانات المفترسة , وكذلك صغارها يستطيعون ذلك إن أحسوا بالخطر .
تقوم الأنثى أيضاً بحضن البيض لمدة من 16 إلى 81 يوم , وعادة ما تحتضن صغيرين كل عام ويغادران العش بعد 26-32 يوماً من التفقيس .
وبعدها يبدأ نمو ريــش الـفــراخ من الــــ3 إلى الــــــ5 الأيام الأولى ليغطيها لاحقاً ريش شائك طويل , ويظهر العرف في اليوم الـ14 على أبعد تقدير .
ومن أهم ميزاته أنه يرى الماء من على بعد كبير ويحس به في باطن الأرض ، فإذا رفرف على موضع يعلم أن فيه ماء .
ويعود موطن الهدهد إلى أوروبا وآسيا ما عدا شمال القارتين الرطب ، وينتشر أيضاً في أفريقيا أثناء الخريف والشتاء .
